CO-DEPENDANCY

When the term codependancy is used we all have our own unique view or interpetation. It is such a broad dysfunction that is extremly hard to define in conscience terms. It is a dysfunctional relationship with the self.
I normally write here a summary of what I have learned while researching a topic. I was visably moved researching this topic.. I knew that I would intertwine my emotions and views tackeling this project. I decided to copy and paste information from MHA (Mental Health America). The following is from the website:
http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/go/codependency
(I strongly advise visiting their website)
"Co-dependents have low self-esteem and look for anything outside of
themselves to make them feel better. They find it hard to “be themselves.” Some
try to feel better through alcohol, drugs or nicotine - and become addicted.
Others may develop compulsive behaviors like workaholism, gambling, or
indiscriminate sexual activity.
They have good intentions. They try to take care of a person who is
experiencing difficulty, but the caretaking becomes compulsive and defeating.
Co-dependents often take on a martyr’s role and become “benefactors” to an
individual in need. A wife may cover for her alcoholic husband; a mother may
make excuses for a truant child; or a father may “pull some strings” to keep his
child from suffering the consequences of delinquent behavior.
The problem is that these repeated rescue attempts allow the needy individual to continue on a destructive course and to become even more dependent on the unhealthy caretaking of the “benefactor.” As this reliance increases, the co-dependent develops a sense of reward and satisfaction from “being needed.” When the caretaking becomes compulsive, the co-dependent feels choiceless and helpless in the relationship, but is unable to break away from the cycle of behavior that causes it. Co-dependents view themselves as victims and are attracted to that same weakness in the love and friendship relationships.
Because co-dependency is usually rooted in a person’s childhood, treatment often involves exploration into early childhood issues and their relationship to current destructive behavior patterns. Treatment includes education, experiential groups, and individual and group therapy through which co-dependents rediscover themselves and identify self-defeating behavior patterns. Treatment also focuses on helping patients getting in touch with feelings that have been buried during childhood and on reconstructing family dynamics. The goal is to allow them to experience their full range of feelings again."

HELP END BULLYING

Although bullying is nothing new there are new forms of bullying and the target is children. Bullying takes the form of peer to peer (example: classmates), adult to child, and cyber bullying. All types of bullying have varied affects as well as lasting psychological damage.
Cyber bullying is difficult to monitor and handle. With many social
sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and ever YouTube, to name a few, can be used as a vessel for bullying. Singling out an individual to bully and causing a snow ball effect.
Face to face bullying by classmates can be physical, and psychological. Usually witnessed by other classmates, and surprisingly even adults. It is significantly damaging when adults do not help or even take on the role of the bully.
In a 2009 study of bullied children age 10-17 found that in one years time (2009-2010) 1 in 23 kids had suicidal thoughts double. Children bullied involving adults quadrupled odds of child suicidal thinking. The effects of bulling are incredibly detrimental. Emotional, Psychological, Social and Physical are typical effects of bullying.
Things to look for are stress, anxiety, low self esteem, low aspirations, isolation, exclusion, withdrawal from activities, low motivation, and self harm. Things a little easier to pinpoint in your child:would be headaches, stress related rashes, stomach problems, lethargy, and sleep disturbances.

SPRING CLEANING; SELF IMPROVEMENT

With spring in the air we may find ourselves sprucing up our environment and even ourselves. Self improvement conj ours up images of diets, lists, meditation, depending on with whom you speak. The phrase alone can make one cringe. With that said, take a deep breath and look at it in a different light. Put a fresh twist on the idea.

Let's face it, we all have our flaws, our quirks, and shortcomings. If we take some time and add a spark or imagination, these things can be seen as simple impurities. Like our spring cleaning in our environment, apply a little elbow grease to ourselves and voila, new prospective. What should be focused on within ourselves is pinpointing those impurities that lead to the behaviors, acts, and thoughts that cause us to fall short of our full potential.

Helping others is a great way to help yourself as well as well as those you help. An opportunity to learn, as well as teach. Studies have shown that volunteering can play a role in increasing your overall sense of well-being, alleviating chronic pain, and even reducing depression. A report by the Corporation for National and Community Service states that people who volunteer have greater longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates of depression, and less incidence of heart disease. A review of current research also suggests that volunteering is especially beneficial to older adults and those who serve 100 volunteer hours a year.

Always remember to be who you are. As much as I want to get more done in a day, or be Betty Crocker, fish like a pro, participate in the Tour De France, simply put, I won't. I am fine with that. I am who I am, I do what I can, and always push myself to improve in some way. I know I have my impurities, I know sometimes I fall short, don't meet expectations at times. However, I am only human! I am comfortable with myself and I enjoy my life. Remember to let others be who they are as well.

If you find yourself in need of more assistance let us know and we can help. There are many resources to help guide you. We can help you locate those resources and get you started if need be. We are here to help one another grow, learn, and live.

CALLING ALL WALKERS

I wanted to share some news about our group. We offer Walk about it Talk about it. It is a program in which local groups get together for a walk in order to get a little exercise and chat about whatever may be on your mind. We are proud to announce a call in Walk about it Talk about it. We are taking it NATIONWIDE.

This will allow for anyone, no matter where you live, to call in and walk your favorite route while sharing your thoughts with us. We currently have active groups in North Dakota that meet a few times a week. This call in program will allow you to fit in a walk and talk session no matter where you are, or what path may be your favorite.

We are in the process of introducing this program. Be sure to check in with our calendar for dates and further information. Feel free to email me, or any of our staff if you have questions and we will be happy to help.

Now, on the subject of exercise... Keep in mind to stay hydrated. We are all aware of vitamin type waters as well as their price. Recently I have been researching what is actually in some of these waters and was surprised. I decided to look into recopies for homemade vitamin packed water. I have posted on Elevate Within Twitter account as well as Facebook some links to healthy vitamin filled water. There are also some unique healthy food ideas/ The following links are to help get you started.....ENJOY!
